Saudi Arabia is a land of enchantment and still a hidden gem! Join Charles "Russ" Russell as he takes us there to experience what 'Arabian Nights' are all about and why it's a must visit if you go to the Middle East.

What specific cities and /or countries did you visit? Riyadh, Al Ula and Jedda; Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

What was your favorite memory from this trip? In Riyadh - Ruins at Diriyah (go in the evening) and The Bouldevard (great multipurpose dining and entertainment venue), learn more about "The Line" and Saudi "Vision 2030" at The Line Exhibit. Al Ula - The crypts at Hegra (Unesco World Heritage site), Stargazing at Habitas Resort and Old Town Al ula, Jeddah - Al Balad (Uneso World Heritage site).

Top excursions and landmarks/sites to visit: Al Ula and Hegra were absolutely the pinnacle of this trip. So rich in history and the culture of the kingdom.

Were there any standout restaurants or foodie must-haves on this trip? The restaurant "Somewhere" in Al Ula. Fabulous menu, in an insta-worthy environment. Definitely the place to see and be seen when visiting Saudi Arabia.

How would you describe the people and culture of this destination? Any interesting cultural lessons? This is a society in flux, often seen in the past as a conservative and borderline xenophobic society the people are warm and welcoming of visitors. Many of the old traditions are still practiced but are no longer legally enforced as a requirement of daily life. Overall I was surprised at the progressive nature of modern Saudi culture.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about this destination? Abundant nightlife. Most evenings begin being "social" around 10:00 pm and those experiences can go on until early in the morning hours. If a traveler likes sleeping in or taking an extended midday nap before restarting their day there is plenty to do and see both by day and night in an extremely safe environment.

Top 5 Tips and recommendations for this trip:

  • Definitely book a dining experience with a local family! This was probably my most favorite experience of the entire trip.
  • Peak travel season in the area is October through January - weather in December was fantastic!
  • Touring Saudi would be a great add-on for clients visiting Jordan, Dubai, Egypt or other Middle East countries.
  • Pack conservative clothing (both men and women); while you may see a few people wearing shorts most remain covered from shoulders to knees out of respect.

Did you travel via cruise ship? If so, please describe the experience and some of the standout features that you were excited about. This was a Travel Weekly FAM trip, but operated as a similar medium sized coach tour typically would. I'm interested in Saudi's Vision 2030 initiatives as well as ongoing development of both The Line and Red Sea projects. I see Saudi becoming a thriving tourist destination globally in the next 5-7 years.

What makes this destination a must-see in your opinion? It's a perfect destination for just about any traveler really. With fantastic history and cultural exposure opportunities as well as thriving wellness and outdoor activities. Get there while it's still relatively untouched and undiscovered by the majority of Western civilization.

Additional thoughts and insights? I hope to bring a group back to Saudi Arabia in 2024 or 2025.
